I have had many people ask me about tips on how to write books over the years, so I thought I would begin a series about how to get started with writing a book and getting your book published. Learning how to start writing a book, and especially learning how to become a good writer, is not easy, but it is certainly worth the effort, especially once you are finally a published author and have a copy of your book in your hands. Whether you are a freelance writer who has written nothing more than web content, or an amateur author who has dreams of writing a book of their own to be published, there are many things that you should understand before writing your own book. While there is plenty of advice about the best writing process, you are going to need to find what works best for you.
When you are sitting down for the first time to consider the kind of novel you are going to write, do not sweat the details. If you want to learn how to write fiction, there is only one wise place to begin, and that is with the very idea of your book — what you want to write about. Some things might change or become more defined as you write, but you need the basic premise in order for your book idea to take off.
There are various styles of outlining, but the aim is to have a solid outline for the majority of what happens in your book, chapter-by-chapter. After you have outlined on a one-pager, write out your content outline, which will guide your writing, and then split each chapter up into multiple sections. Write the thesis of your book as one sentence, then expand it into one paragraph, and then a one-page outline. Once you have your outline, remember it is a living document meant to serve you and your book.
Even pantsers need a framework for their books, and if you are writing a novel or a work of nonfiction, it is imperative that you first learn to write an outline. One of the best ways to build your writing skills is by reading work by successful authors who have published books like the one you are working on. The major difference between published authors and non-published authors is that published authors are really following their dreams, taking one step at a time using proven guides for writing books. Finished, (traditionally) published books are always a product of several people working on the story and the writing, so it is not worth comparing yourself to one.
Here are my own personal tips for getting started with your writing, and more importantly, giving yourself the best possible chance at finishing something you started. If you have never written anything beyond grocery lists and restaurant reviews, you are probably better off not starting out with the aim of writing a book right off the bat. You do not have to know the title of your book in this stage, but I like to start thinking of my title later, after I have finished the outline. If an idea comes up later on, you can write that down and use the Chapter Summary to fit that, but do not let yourself be distracted by things not related to that book.
